SAI Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What exactly is SAI?

A: Sigma Alpha Iota (pronounced ee-O-tuh) is a music fraternity for women. It's purposes are to foster interest in music and to promote social contact among persons sharing an interest in music. SAI is involved in many philanthropic activities and sponsors many musicales nationwide. SAI sisters share strong bonds with each other that last a lifetime. 

Q: Is SAI a sorority?

A: No! Sigma Alpha Iota is a fraternity. It's purpose is different from that of sororities and other honors organizations. SAI members may also become members of general sororities, Greek honors organizations, and professional non-music fraternities or sororities. 

Q: Why is SAI called a fraternity and not a sorority?

A: In the beginning SAI WAS called a sorority. In 1926, the word "fraternity" replaced "sorority", which comes from the abstract feminine Latin noun fraternitas, and refers to both men and women. All Greek music organizations are called fraternities today. 

Q: What kind of things do Members In Training do?

A: M.I.T's (Members In Training) Participate and engage in many sisterly activities and workshops to provide them with the ability and opportunity to learn the ideals and ways of the fraternity. For more information, go to our contact page and email us, or ask any sister. 

Q: Does Sigma Alpha Iota participate in hazing activities?

A: Absolutely not! As members we are sworn to respect the dignity of all persons. We are VERY serious about enforcing this rule. 

Q: Is SAI a service Organization?

A: No. We are an organization that demands professionalism amongst women musicians. However, we do take pride in participating in various activities to promote a better community.

Q: How do I join Sigma Alpha Iota?

A: Sigma Alpha Iota currently has collegiate and alumnae chapters that interested persons may join. As for collegiate chapters, attending the formal Rush Program is the initial way to inquire about membership within the fraternity. During Rush, all requirements will be explained in greater detail. There are certain national and chapter requirements that must be met in order to become a member.

Q: What requirements must an interested candidate meet to qualify for membership?

In order to qualify for collegiate membership one must have the following: 

  1. A 2.5 GPA, (some chapters may require a higher G.P.A) 

  2. A sincere interest in music 

  3. One completed MUSIC credit 

  4. Meet financial obligations 

  5. Pass the National comprehensive exam 

Q: What is the "Rush" program?

A: Rush is very different from chapter to chapter. The main goal of rush is for the prospective M.I.T.'s and sisters to get to know each other. Rush activities vary from casual gatherings to more formal gatherings. If you're not sure whether you want to pursue membership in Sigma Alpha Iota or not, we strongly encourage you to attend the various events hosted by your school's collegiate chapter throughout the academic year.
